Lettice and I just watched the first two episodes of Robin of Sherwood. She had never seen it and I hadn’t seen it since it was first broadcast.

As that was over twenty years ago my memories were more than a little rose tinted (to pick one example, back when I was ten, Nasir was the coolest character on telly – he had a studded leather jacket like Avon’s and was like a ninja who hung round with Robin Hood; today I have to ask, doesn’t actually look very saracen does he?)

Comparisons with the recent Robin Hood series are hard to avoid. But I’m going to try. I’ll just say that whilst I enjoyed the new show as mindless entertainment, it doesn’t hold a candle to the old one in terms of storytelling.

We amused ourselves by putting together a dream team of characters.

From Robin of Sherwood:
Robin, Will, Little John.
From Robin Hood:
Gisbourne, Marion, Much.

  1. I rewatched Robin of Sherwood recently too and I enjoyed it far more that Robin Hood. It’s not perfect but it’s a lot better than a lot of other stuff from the 70s and 80s turns out to be if watched now. If my memory isn’t playing tricks Mark Ryan (Nasir) was cast as an English bad guy and only found out the change to a saracen when he turned up on for shooting.

I see Kevin Costner doesn’t make your list 😉

  2. Steve Pugh says:

Yep, that’s what Mark Ryan’s own web site says as well, plus “He still proudly holds the UK record for killing most people in one hour of children’s daytime television.” 🙂

Notice that the sheriff doesn’t make either list, so room for Alan Rickman.

  3. Thats a record to hold. I wonder who the US equivalent is?

If your going to take one character from that film it should be Alan Rickman’s sheriff. This crew your assembling seems short one Friar Tuck any thoughts?

  4. Steve Pugh says:

Friar Tuck is always a bit naff so it doesn’t make a lot of difference. I suppose we could wait and see who plays the part in season two of the new series, presuming the “we’ll only do Tuck if we can get Matt Lucas” is just hype.

Someone at work asked whether I’d considered including anyone from Maid Marion and her Merry Men, which I hadn’t thought of before…
