22nd and early 23rd Century Classes

This page is about those classes that were in service in the period between the time of the Romulan War and the launching of the first ships with the familiar original series styling. This period is roughly between the dates 2160 and 2220.

Marshall class Destroyers

[Forward view of Marshall class] This class appears in the Space Flight Chronology book and is mentioned in FASA.

It entered service during the Romulan War and hence would have been a Terran design that was later brought into Starfleet services (presumably being assigned registries, very low registries, at that time). The design was so successful that it remained in service for fifty years, presumably continuing in production for at least some of that time. In fact one proposed successor design turned out to be inferior to the Marshall.

In service from 2157 to 2207, ships of this class include the U.S.S. Patton and the U.S.S. Hannibal.

The hammerhead design of the Marshall has some similarities with the Federation CL (light cruiser, Texas class) from the Star Fleet Battles wargame. See Jack Bohn's page for more on this class.

FASA took mauch of their background from Space Flight Chronology. However in The Federation sourcebook they featured an illustration of the U.S.S. Patton with a quite different design. (The more relevant Romulan War sourcebook doesn't explicitly associate any illustration or description with any particular class.)

Daedalus class

[Side view of Daedalus class] These were amongst the first ships commissioned by the post-war Federation, they were removed from service by 2196.

A fandom publication Jackill's Daedalus Class Exploration Craft Data Sheets gives us various details, such as that there were twenty built in total (NCC-170 to NCC-189) and that they were capable of warp 3.7.

The Encyclopedia assigns the U.S.S. Carolina (both editions) and the U.S.S. Valiant (first edition only) to this class despite the fact that this is impossible by reason of the 2196 date for the last Daedalus leaving service.

The Decipher RPG supplement Starfleet Operations Manual mentions the U.S.S. Lindbergh, U.S.S. Wakefield, U.S.S. Anson, U.S.S. Drake and U.S.S. Republic.

Bonaventure

[Side view of U.S.S. Bonaventure] This ship appears in the animated episode "The Time Trap" and is described as "the first ship to have warp drive installed". She is stuck in the Delta Triangle and Spock says that "The crew's descendants may still be living," which places her disappearance at least several decades before TAS.

Depending on what Scotty meant by 'first to have warp drive' the dating could be anywhere from the 2060s onwards. The design fits roughly into a post-Deadalus, pre-Constitution era. But as Enterprise establishes that saucer sections and some form of NX-registry predate the Federation (in addition to NAR-registries (TNG) and the arrowhead symbol (VOY)) then all dating bets are off.

Star Trek Star Charts gives the date of the Bonaventure's disappearance as 2079, which is plausible even if no evidence is given to support it.

Most fan sources have given the registry as NCC-S1100 but clearer screen shots show the registry below. This registry may indicate a pre-Federation or very early Federation timeframe.

Caracal class cruisers

[Side view of Caracal class] This class is detailed in the fandom publication U.S.S. Caracal Class Command Cruiser Blueprints. Whilst they are given CC registries there, simply adding an N is all that is required to bring them in line with the rest of Starfleet (assuming non-sequential, batch issuing of registries).

15 vessels were built around 2290 and remained in service until the early 2230s. Registries were NCC-750 to NCC-764. Ships of this class saw service as command, strike, heavy and light crusiers.

Horizon class

This class were a half way house between the Daedalus and Constitution classes. While retaining the spherical primary hull of the older class they ressembled their successors in other respects. Two of these vessels would go on to be refitted as Constitution class heavy cruisers.

Sub-classes

NCC-1017U.S.S. Constellation
History:commissioned as Horizon sub-class in 2212.
Upgraded to Constitution class in 2228.
Destroyed by Doomsday Machine in 2266.
Notes:TOS "The Doomsday Machine" app.
NCC-1371U.S.S. Republic
History:commissioned as Archon sub-class in 2202.
Upgraded to Constitution class sometime after 2211.
Assigned as training vessel in 2238.
Possibly decommissioned in 2257.
Possibly still in service in 2291.
Notes:TOS "Court Martial" his.
"ST VI: The Undiscovered Country" ref.
FASA gives the registry as NCC-1373.

Mann class cruisers

[Aft view of Mann class] This class appears in the Space Flight Chronology book and is mentioned in FASA. No registries are given but as the dates (as corrected from the SFC/FASA timeline by James Dixon) are compatible I've assigned the U.S.S. Valiant to this class and given the class ship the registry NCC-1200.

The class was in service from 2206 to 2244. Other ships of this class include the U.S.S. Leonides, U.S.S. Endurance, and U.S.S. Poseidon.

Ranger class

[Fore quarter view of Ranger class] This class appears in the LUG Star Trek RPG Core Rules Book and is portrayed as the predecessor to the Constitution class. It entered service in 2215 and was still in service in the late 2260s. The U.S.S. Ranger was NCC-915.

Other ships of this class included the U.S.S. Bastion NCC-811, U.S.S. Carolina NCC-1000 (TOS "Friday's Child" ref), U.S.S. Explorer NCC-1035, U.S.S. Orleans NCC-966, U.S.S. Sal'koth NCC-982 and U.S.S. Valiant NCC-1223 (TOS "A Taste of Armageddon" his. See Problems and Oddities).

The LUG RPG supplement Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of The Orginal Series Era changes the registry of the U.S.S. Ranger to NCC-781 and also gives for the first time the registries of the other ships listed above.

The Decipher RPG supplement Starfleet Operations Manual mentions all those listed above and additionally the following: U.S.S. Challenger, U.S.S. Coronado (the ship that discovered Cestus III, see Coronado class), U.S.S. Emden (allegedly the ship from "ST:VI The Undiscovered Country", see Miranda class), U.S.S. Indomitable, U.S.S. Revere (allegedly the ship from "ST: The Motion Picture", see Hermes class), U.S.S. Solzhenitzyn, U.S.S. Spann, U.S.S. Decatur, U.S.S. Duncan, U.S.S. Halsey and the U.S.S. Springfield. No registries are given for any of these ships. I would hazard a guess that the Challenger and Springfield are also supposed to represent the ships from "ST:VI The Undiscovered Country".

[Aft, Fore, Port and Dorsal View Schematics]

The various sources disagree on the size of the Ranger, with the Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of The Orginal Series Era giving a length of 136m whilst the Starfleet Operations Manual gives 227m. The larger size is unlikely as, due to the design of the saucer, it would lead to greater internal volume than that of the Constitution class. I've created a simple comparison chart showing the two sizes and a Constitution.

What's more the ratios of the length, width and height given in each source do not match the measured ratios taken from the schematics, in fact they don't even come close. The number of decks also varies: 8 and 14; whilst the crew complement is consistent at 287.

Randy Asplund, the artist of the original illustration show above has a slightly different version on his web site. This shows a primary hull that somewhat resembled a spinning top!

Baton Rouge class cruisers

[Aft view of Baton Rouge class under construction] This class appears in the Space Flight Chronology book, and is mentioned by FASA, as the predecessor to the Constitution class. It is described in the novel The Final Reflection as "a saucer connected to an oblong block, the warp engines in stand off nacelles".

By converting the FASA dates relative to the five year mission to a more normal timeline we can say that this class was in service between the 2220s and the 2260s. (Which is fine for a 2240s launch date of the Constitution class but problematic for a 2220s launch date.) Ships of this class included the U.S.S. Glasgow, U.S.S. Hokkaido, U.S.S. Savannah, U.S.S. Moscow and U.S.S. Tehran.
[Dorsal View Schematic]

Star Fleet Tactical Database Series 2 by Lawrence Miller contains illustrations of the U.S.S. Moscow that is clearly the same ship as portrayed in Space Flight Chronology. Unlike many of the other ships in this product the details are not inconsistent with the original. [Dorsal and Starbord Schematics]

Federation Starship Recognition Chart by Aridas Sofia and Todd Guenther a Nordenskjold class that likely to be a closely related class. In 2290 it is classed as MK III/02 Light Cruiser and two ships - NCC-1427 and NCC-1430 remain in service.[Port Silhouette]

Marklin class destroyers

[Top view of Marklin class] This class is from FASA's Four Years War supplement. The picture is taken from a scan of the front cover and is the only illustration of this ship that I know of.

I've decided that it makes sense if this class was actually of the Baton Rouge generation and hence I'd say that the 20 vessels were built during the 2220s and remained in service until the aftermath of the Four Years War (c.2157 in my corrected timeline). The U.S.S. Xenophon, Captain Garth's ship at the Battle of Axanar was a member of this class.
