Vessels of Starfleet - Miscellaneous Classes

Miscellaneous Classes

This page covers those ships that don't really fit into the other pages. Mainly because we don't know the actual class name.

U.S.S. Yeager

This ship (or ships of the same class) appeared in the background of several episodes of Deep Space Nine's fifth, sixth and seventh seasons.

The Deep Space Nine Technical Manual includes a "wreckbashed" (constructed from salvaged wrecks of damaged starships, the phrase comes from the modeller's term "kitbashed", which is of course how the ship models were created) ship that looks quite a lot like this vessel. Photos of the model show that it is the U.S.S. Yeager NCC-65674 (but see Problems and Oddities).

The LUG RPG supplement Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet calls this class a Light Cruiser (402m long, 13 decks, in service from 2373), and lists the U.S.S. Aldrin NCC-69825 and the U.S.S. Gemini NCC-70328. The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon mentions the U.S.S. Votos NCC-67983.

U.S.S. Centaur

NCC-42043U.S.S. Centaur
History:In service in 2374.
Notes:DS9 "A Time to Stand" app; DS9 "Sacrifice of Angels" ref.
The registry was first published in an issue of the Star Trek Fact Files and is broadly consistent with the apparant age of the design.

The Deep Space Nine Technical Manual includes a wreckbashed ship that looks like this vessel.

The images above, that became available in March 2002, show that the model was a more complex creation than originally thought. It mounts a Miranda bridge on a differently scaled Excelsior saucer. If the 'real' ship is scaled according to the Miranda components then it's a small (~200m long) vessel and could fill an escort/corvette/perimeter action ship role. If it is scaled according to the Excelsior components then it is medium sized (~380m long as given in the DS9 TM) and could fill a destroyer/fast frigate role. The registry but not the name are legible in the model photos.

The LUG RPG supplement Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet calls this class the Centaur class and makes it a Cruiser (381m long, 16 decks, in service from 2373), and also mentions the U.S.S. Chiron. The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon mentions the U.S.S. Thessalonica NCC-72884.

U.S.S. Curry, Shelley class

Mark Nguyen invented the speculative class name whilst musing on the function of this odd looking ship in rec.arts.startrek.tech:

"As an aside, I suspect this kitbashed ship (which I will call the "Shelley-class" after Mary Shelley, author of "Frankenstein") to be a transport, perhaps the long-sought troop transports need to haul Marines about. The shuttlebay-forward design tipped me to this, as well as the suggested ability to separate from the sec. hull to enable the pirmary to warp away. Shelley-class ships' secondary hulls may be dedicated hulls for shuttles and troop barracks, and may be able to be left on station if necessary. Passing thought..."

Apparantly, this ship is named after Dan Curry - U.S.S. Curry and the registry is NCC-45617, which is largely consistent with an Excelsior variant.

The LUG RPG supplement Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet calls this class the Curry class and makes it a Cruiser (383m long, 30 decks, in service from 2373). The description fits the troop transport/carrier concepts. Also mentioned are the U.S.S. Drexler NCC-45618 and the U.S.S. Sternbach NCC-45619. The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon mentions the U.S.S. Harryhausen NCC-72846 and the U.S.S. Simms NCC-73048.

Raging Queen

[Photo of side view of Raging Queen model] [Photo of top view of Raging Queen model]

The Raging Queen is not the same ship as the U.S.S. Curry. There is more battle damage and the nacelles are rotated ninety degrees. It is possible that there were two models or that the U.S.S. Curry was converted into the Raging Queen at some point. The name is a reference to a comedy sketch and lacks the U.S.S. prefix. The registry is NCC-43384.

Both these ships use components from Excelsior and Constitution/Miranda kits. If scaled to the size of the Excelsior components the they are roughly 350m in length (The DS9 TM says 383.41m) but have massively overscale warp nacelles. If scaled to the size of the warp nacelles then they are less then 200m long.

The Deep Space Nine Technical Manual includes a wreckbashed ship that looks like this vessel.

Triple nacelled Excelsior variant

[Photo of side view of the triple nacelled model model] [Photo of top view of triple nacelled model model]

As far as anyone has been able to tell this vessel never appeared on screen. There is no name or registry number on the model. The Deep Space Nine Technical Manual includes a wreckbashed ship that looks a like this vessel.

One mystery is which way up the ship is supposed to go. The DS9 TM shows it with one nacelle up and two down but the photos of the model may suggest otherwise. As the saucer is made from two model kit saucer top halves there is actually a "bridge" at both "top" and "bottom". I prefer a one nacelle down, two up configuration - which reminds me of the Star Fleet Battles War Destroyer.

Obviously the ship should be scaled according to the Excelsior class components which makes it just under 400m long. However, the DS9 TM states 288.33m. The ship could function as a medium or light cruiser, a frigate or a heavy destroyer.

The LUG RPG supplement Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet identifies this design with the unseen Chimera class.

Tug

 [Sceenshot of tug]

This is clearly some sort of tug or tender. The illustration below comes from the Fact Files and has been reprinted in The Magazine (volume 3 issue 9, January 2003). The size comparison chart makes it roughly 90m long.

Holoship

This class appeared in the movie "Insurrection". It's unknown whether there are any other vessels like this in service with Starfleet, but it seems likely that there are.
